Borderland
Benedict Flett

Over two trips in the autumns of 2018 and 2019 Benedict explored Minsk and the eastern oblasts of Belarus. Seeking out edgelands and contradictions Ben was able to record how both ideology and identity continue to operate in this country at the edge of Europe.

As Ben describes in an essay introducing the work “Decommunization drives in other former republics have sought to banish socialist monuments from public space, in Belarus, Soviet symbolism remains deeply enmeshed in the structures of everyday life.”Throughout this 80 page book these monuments make frequent appearances and their presence becomes a key theme of the work.
